THRUSH TSUNAMI - MEGA MORNING
Dave, here is todays report.
Watch period - 07.15 hrs - 11.00 hrs.F0 N. Again the reservoir was like a mill pond - today`s cloud was extensive Altocumulus at 8 Oktas, which later broke up (at end of watch) to normal level Altocumulus. Brighter out to the East and could see cumulus over North Sea and Penyghent to NW.
Right from the start, Fieldfares were stongly in evidence which was no surprise given the absolutely ideal conditions - in the event, the morning turned out to be awesomely awesome and stupendously stupendous - what a movement of thrushes (3666 in total - minimum count) !!!!!! - mainly Fieldfare (3007) but Redwing (659) kept their end up. Birds were coming through on a broad front with flocks seen over Airedale, over Soil Hill going over the Fly Flatts area and also directly overhead - those overhead were pretty quiet, but the odd Redwing seep and Fieldfare chak gave away flocks directly overhead. Also came through at different heights - some eye level and some at circa 300 feet.
It was interesting to note that some groups were mixed flocks of Fieldfare, Redwing, Starling and finches (unable to ID latter - probably mainly Chaffinch and some Bambling).
Woodpigeon were not as strong as yesterday and were coming through SW much further to the East than yesterday - most groups only viewable via scope.
To finish off a marvellous morning, the icing on the cake proved to be 7 Whooper Swans travelling South over Denholme out over Mountain, Queensbury (Brian alerted by phone but I don`t think he got them).
